1.     Strategic Bombing

                                                a.     The US and Britain launched a series of bombardments on Germany.

                       b.   US introduced long-range fighters that could protect bombers and allow precision bombing.

                        c.   Targets were mainly oilfields and communications centers.

                       d.   British bombers completely annihilated Dresden, which has raised moral questions since.

                       e.    Aerial war over Germany diverted German defense from other fronts.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

A.     The Defeat of Nazi Germany

 

1. D-Day (June 6, 1944)

a.     American, British, and Canadian troops landed on the coast of Normandy France.

b.     beaches of France were heavily fortified but the Allies established a beachhead and invaded from it.

c.      planned by General Dwight D. Eisenhower

d.     France was liberated from German occupation by the beginning of September 1944.

2.The Battle of the Bulge

a.Germans launched a counter attack in Belgium and Luxembourg through the Ardennes Forest.

b.Because the Germans had pushed forward into the Allied line, it is called the Battle of the Bulge

c.Although the Allies suffered heavy casualties, this was the last attempt for the Germans as the Allies crossed the Rhine in March of 1945 and chased the German army back into Germany.

3. The Capture of Berlin

a. The Russians swept quickly into Germany from the east and moved to capture      Berlin.

b.     As the Russians approached, Hitler committed suicide in a bunker in Berlin on April 30, 1945.

c.      The Russians occupied Berlin.
